Reno'd room, sagging mattresses and a rusty/mildewed tub. The dresser and TV were spattered with what was once wet sand, now dried concrete. The phone I grabbed to alert the front desk didn’t work (the second did). Housekeeping was offered, but it was late and my kids were getting settled in. I was assured the room would be properly cleaned in the morning. The restaurant (Sunrise Cafe) was a pleasant, but pricey buffet (good food) but expect to pay a 20% service charge for self-serve. Kids' camp was fun, according to my discerning 6 year olds. The definite highlight. The hotel pool was exceptionally high in chlorine and we were greeted by unhappy guests seeking a silent pool experience (at a hotel billed as kid-friendly). The room hadn’t been cleaned as of 3:30PM. This time I called to cancel the rest of our reservation, but was told we couldn’t - it was past check-out time, and that she had “no record of our call” about our room’s condition. Record or not, I placed the call, and the room was not properly cleaned which she could come see for herself. It was now 3:45pm, and no one had yet come to clean. Time to check out. She agreed to refund our final two nights, which I appreciated, but did so with a “threat” of sorts that we had to be out by 4PM. My wife was packing our belongings, I was waiting to collect our kids from kids’ camp. We rushed to "get out" by the 4pm cutoff. A true disappointment. We had no more desire to leave than they did. Ironically, the cleaning person showed up as we were leaving the room - at 3:59pm. I am grateful for the refund, but disappointed we had to ask.

Food. We only had breakfast there. Once in the dining room an once in the room. Both times the food was great. And the service fast. The dinning room was appointed very nicely and was overlooking the beach area. The common areas in and around the lobby areas were nice, but the outside walks going to the rooms were tiled, and they looked like if you went barefooted your feet would stick to them as they looked very dirty and sticky. The Policy of No Pesticides (which they are very proud of, states that they had a more natural policy in place) well it didn't work well for us. I counted two spiders in the room, one being in the tub, another on the floor and 7 other various bugs through out the room, one of them on the bed. I saw more bugs in the room than I did on the grounds! Really too bad as the pool areas and common places other than the tile walkways were nice. The people were very friendly and most helpful. They just need to get the bugs under control in the rooms. If it wasn't for the bugs I would have given the hotel an 9.

It was our first stay at the plantation. The grounds and staff are incredible. The pools were very clean and the ocean was beautiful. Every room above the first floor are ocean front rooms. The room was very nice. That being said it is not near the Ritz just steps down the beach. I did pay less than 1/2 the price than I would have paid at the Ritz so the trade off was worth it. I hope we are able to visit again very soon.

We loved the hotel. The best feature is the location. We had a wonderful view from the balcony overlooking the ocean. The rhythmic sound of the waves crashing against the beach soothed the soul. Waking to pink sunrises over the ocean made everything worthwhile. The hotel is great for families with kids. The toddler pool is right next to the playground and in viewing distance from another pool. This is ideal for those who have both a toddler and a 7 year old. We could keep an eye on both children. We enjoyed drinks from the poolside bar. There are lots of kids in the pool which is great for families, but you have to like children. There are also bicycles for rent with 7 miles of nature trails. I recommend buying food and wine from the little grocery store on the resort. It costs a bit less -- although still with a resort mark-up -- and you can sit on your balcony to eat. The pizza delivery was also pretty reasonable. Remember we had small children which takes away from the enjoyment of fine dining.
